Before wine comes grapes. Before grapes are the vineyards. Taking the true spirit of vine planting is what makes the work of Aditi different.
She reminds that there is the sun and soil and its essential goodness, and a lot of people’s toil behind that sip of wine.
When Aditi Patil would spend hours reading about plants and nature in the library and began her education in Horticulture, little did she know that becoming a scientist was not the only place this could lead to.
The Universe was writing a different script for her…
The Organically Destined Entrepreneur
Patil’s journey began not with grand ambitions but with a rather inadvertent turn of events. After her undergraduate gold medal in horticulture, she was on track for another academic accolade when circumstances required a move to Pune.
Rather than extend her studies, she made a clean break. “I told my parents I didn’t want a regular job,” she says. “I wanted to do something on my own, though I had no idea what business even meant.”
Her mother, an economist and business counsellor, had asked: “Are you absolutely sure you want to follow this path?” The answer, Aditi says, was a ‘Yes’ then. A slightly hesitant but a definite and firm ‘Yes’.
Today, eight years later, she has built something inspiring: a global viticulture education programme that reaches students on every continent, from Sommeliers and Wine Professionals to Students and Enthusiasts, from cruise ships to vineyards in places like USA, Brazil, Dubai, Europe, Kenya to Australia teaching the world about the science of grape growing while championing India’s untapped potential in wine.
Not An Easy Path
When Aditi began her journey, the initial year was a time of uncertainty, although a tentative start in garden design with friends and family ignited the entrepreneurial spark.
By March 2018, mentored by her mother, she had formalised her firm Greenflorescence, initially focusing on landscape design and implementation. The work was steady but felt limiting.
Then came the pandemic, and with it, an unexpected pivot that would define her career. As lockdowns impacted her landscape projects, Patil found herself offering workshops on organic farming and gardening.
A local horticulture college approached her to train their students during their industrial training semester. The experience was revelatory. “I realized their syllabus was completely outdated,” she says. “These students needed to know so much more than what they were being taught.”
This gap between academic theory and practical knowledge became the foundation of her mission. She developed her first structured course, which she agrees was a primitive version of what is now her comprehensive Landscaping And Urban Horticulture course curriculum.
Finding her true calling
The transition to viticulture wasn’t immediate. Despite having formal training in fruit science, Aditi initially saw grapes as just another crop. It was her mother who suggested she leverage her viticulture knowledge more strategically.
In 2021, she offered a free viticulture workshop, expecting modest interest. Over 100 students signed up. The response was so overwhelming that she quickly expanded, partnering with institutions like the IHMs and shortly after established her formal certificate courses.
But Aditi’s vision extended beyond traditional education. She recognized that India’s wine industry, anchored in Maharashtra’s Nashik region, known as the wine capital of India, was hampered by a fundamental disconnection between grape growing and wine appreciation.
“Wine is not a mass-manufactured product,” Aditi explains. “It’s all about stories, connection with nature. But how can people appreciate something they don’t understand?”
This philosophy drives her four-tier educational system: Elementary Viticulture (12 hours) introduces absolute beginners to the basics; Viticulture & Vineyard Management(20 hours) bridges the gap between growing and winemaking; Tropical Viticulture (21 hours) focuses on warm-climate techniques relevant to India and similar regions and Advanced Viticulture (45 hours) serves professionals seeking comprehensive expertise.
What makes her approach unique is accessibility. While India has only about three formal viticulture degree programs, all of them highly academic requiring several basic requirements, Aditi’s courses aim to demystify and democratise the science for diverse audiences, from hospitality professionals to wine enthusiasts to career changers.
Global impact, Indian heart
Today, Aditi conducts up to seven online sessions daily, reaching students across every continent. Her first international student was in Dubai, followed by learners in Brazil, Australia, Kenya, the Maldives, and throughout Europe and North America.
“I have the fortunate opportunity to cater to people from different paradigms,” she says. “For students outside India, I explain our approach to viticulture. For Indian students, I show them there’s a whole world out there.”
This two-way cultural exchange is intentional. India is one of the world’s largest table grape exporters and that chances are, grapes at your local store originated in Nashik or Pune. Yet most Indians remain unaware of their country’s viticultural significance, while global wine lovers know little about Indian terroir and techniques.
Aditi’s online-first model, born from pandemic necessity, has become her greatest strength. With students literally scattered across the globe, in-person instruction would be impossible. Her flexible, hour-based system allows working professionals to learn at their own pace while maintaining full-time careers.
One computer science graduate from Nashik, whose family owns vineyards, completed her advanced course and has since developed patented technology for vineyard and wine production. Another student used Aditi’s workshop as a launching pad for a viticulture internship tour in the United States.
The Bigger Mission
Behind the technical expertise lies a more profound purpose: reconnecting people with nature. Her organisation’s tagline – “taking you a step closer to nature” – reflects her belief that understanding viticulture means understanding the intricate relationship between vine, vineyard, and grape.
“Viticulture is a very demanding job,” she emphasizes. “I want to start conversations where people realize wine doesn’t come easy. There’s glamour attached to wine, but thousands of people work to get that bottle to your table.”
This educational mission feels particularly urgent as India’s wine industry navigates what Aditi calls “The Great Adjustment”, a period of challenge that she believes can only be overcome through deeper knowledge of viticulture fundamentals.
As Aditi continues expanding her global reach through LinkedIn and her website, which is currently undergoing a reconstruction to handle international demand, she remains grounded in her original mission: making viticultural knowledge accessible to anyone with genuine curiosity.
Her success suggests a deep aspiration and ambition for this kind of bridge-building education, particularly as wine appreciation grows globally while remaining disconnected from agricultural reality.
By teaching the world about Indian viticulture while bringing global perspectives to Indian students, Aditi Patil has created something entirely new: a truly international classroom rooted in the soil of Maharashtra’s vineyards.
