Indigenous and traditional food knowledge systems play a far more central role in nutrition and climate resilience than mainstream food policy usually acknowledges. That is the conclusion of a peer-reviewed review published this year in the journal Nature Food. The review examined how indigenous communities across multiple regions manage diet, food production and ecological knowledge as one integrated system, not as separate concerns. It argued that food policy frameworks built around industrial agriculture routinely fail to account for that integration.
The review’s central argument is that indigenous food systems encode generations of accumulated knowledge about local ecology. This includes knowing which wild foods are safe and nutritious in a given season, and which crop varieties withstand drought or flooding. The authors argue that this knowledge functions as a form of food systems literacy, an understanding of how diet, environment and health interact. For the places where it evolved, that understanding is often more nuanced than knowledge embedded in globalised commercial food systems. Those global systems operate at scale across diverse conditions.
Nutritional diversity emerges as a particular strength of indigenous food systems in the review’s analysis. Diets built around a wide range of wild and cultivated foods, harvested across different seasons, tend to deliver a broader spread of micronutrients. Diets narrowed around a small number of staple crops deliver less. That pattern matters. Public health researchers link the global shift towards fewer, uniform staple crops to rising rates of micronutrient deficiency, even in populations with adequate calorie intake.
Building resilience against climate variability
Climate resilience is the review’s second major theme. Indigenous agricultural practices in many regions have evolved to manage variability. Farmers plant multiple varieties with different tolerances. They time cultivation around locally observed environmental signals rather than fixed calendar dates, and maintain wild food sources as a buffer against crop failure. The review notes that these same practices are increasingly relevant to non-indigenous farming systems. Those systems now face the climate variability that indigenous knowledge has long managed.
The review calls for food systems policy to formally integrate indigenous knowledge, rather than treating it as supplementary or purely cultural. It argues that doing so would strengthen nutrition outcomes and climate adaptation planning in the regions where these systems remain active. That case echoes a similar argument made about India’s community seed banks. Those seed banks likewise preserve traditional agricultural knowledge that formal breeding and policy systems have largely bypassed (see related story). The pattern extends well beyond any single region or food system.
The obstacles to policy change
Turning that argument into policy, however, faces practical obstacles. Land rights, cultural practice and community governance structures often shape indigenous food systems. Conventional food policy does not accommodate these structures, so genuine integration needs more than technical acknowledgement. It requires policy frameworks that support the land access, cultural continuity and community authority which allow these food systems to keep functioning. That is a more structural undertaking than simply documenting traditional practices for their nutritional or ecological insights.

The review’s authors draw on case studies spanning several continents. They compare indigenous communities in different ecological zones, from arid grasslands to tropical forest and coastal regions. These communities have developed distinct but structurally similar approaches to managing food security under variable conditions. That cross-regional consistency supports the review’s case that food systems literacy is a genuine, transferable body of knowledge. It is not simply a collection of unrelated local traditions, each requiring separate justification.
Researchers outside the review have generally welcomed its framing. They caution against treating indigenous knowledge as a ready-made solution that can be extracted and applied elsewhere. It depends on the community relationships and land-based practice that sustain it. Knowledge that depends on continuous, place-based observation does not transfer cleanly into policy documents or technical manuals. That is why the review’s call for structural support, rather than extraction, matters to how governments and development agencies respond to its findings.
