The Philippines has shipped its first recorded consignment of coconuts to Liberia, sending 32,000 young coconuts from Davao to the West African country in a trade the government hopes to grow. Davao-based exporter Avante Agri-Products Philippines Inc. handled the shipment, working with the Department of Agriculture’s Davao Regional Field Office.

The consignment, worth about US$22,400 on a free-on-board basis, amounted to roughly 50 metric tons packed into 1,600 sacks and loaded onto two 40-foot refrigerated containers. Shipping line CMA CGM used its Smart Reefer Container technology to keep the coconuts fresh during the voyage from Davao to the Liberian capital, Monrovia.

Liberia’s Ministry of Agriculture is coordinating receipt of the shipment, which officials describe as a donation rather than a straight commercial sale. The coconuts are intended for rural Liberian communities and feeding programmes rather than retail markets, according to the agencies involved in the export.

Government eyes a bigger West African market

Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the shipment was a test of demand rather than an end in itself. “The challenge is to turn these initial shipments into sustained demand that delivers better returns to our farmers,” he said, pointing to market access and private-sector partnerships as the next steps for expanding Philippines coconut exports.

The Philippines is the world’s largest coconut producer, but its exporters have historically concentrated on established markets in North America, Europe and East Asia. A first shipment to Liberia opens a market Philippine officials have not previously targeted at this scale, though no follow-up volumes or additional West African destinations have been announced.

Coconut trade carries weight for Davao’s economy

Davao, the source of the shipment, is one of the Philippines’ main coconut-growing regions, and its exporters have pushed for government support in reaching non-traditional markets. Framing the Liberia shipment partly as aid, rather than purely commerce, may also help Philippine officials build goodwill while testing West African demand.

Agriculture officials have not disclosed whether similar shipments are planned to other West African countries, or how quickly a second consignment to Liberia might follow. For now, the shipment stands as a small but symbolic marker of the Philippines’ ambition to diversify its coconut export markets beyond its traditional buyers.
